Introduction
Alation’s main mascot, Allie, has a loving fanbase internally and externally. Hedgie has been recently introduced by the Customer Engagement Management (CEM) team to supplement their services. Before their restyle, their designs did not feel visually cohesive with each other, and their style became outdated with our new company rebrand. Additionally, we still had to update our spot illustrations! After half a year of rolling out our new company brand, I finally had time to update the illustration set
we had.
Redesign vs. Restyle
When addressing the mascot redesigns, I had to think of it as a restyle rather than a redesign. Allie’s silhouette is iconic and dear to the company culture, so I can only make what I like to call “lifestyle improvements”. Hedgie is relatively new and niche to the CEM team, so I had more creative liberty. When it came to brainstorming for the new spot illustrations, I wanted to incorporate some type of perspective, since we were slowly introducing isometric elements in our brand. However, it couldn’t feel too flat or too 3D since the spot illustrations had to be versatile/cohesive with whatever design element it was paired with.
